ABSTRACT

Post stroke cognitive impairment is common but remains underdiagnosed and carries a poor prognosis. Attention deficits after stroke are the most common and prominent consequences at the cognitive level of functioning. Deficits in attention can affect the ability to engage with physiotherapy, also affect functional recovery. The treatment of cognitive deï¬cits is necessary because they have a negative effect on functional abilities and quality of life. The objective of the study was to find out the effect of attention specific activities along with conventional physiotherapy on attention and functional recovery in acute stroke patients. Thirty participants between the ages 55 to 75 years with acute stroke selected. Participants were divided into Group A which received conventional Physiotherapy and Group B receiving attention specific activities along with conventional Physiotherapy for 3 weeks of duration. Pre and post intervention assessments were done by using trial making test (TMT) A & B and Functional Independence measure (FIM). The result of this study showed that there is significant difference in pre and post values for both scales except of FIM scores for group A. But when comparing Group A and Group B, group B improved more on TMT and FIM score than group A. The study concluded that  attention activities given to the patients along with conventional physiotherapy proves to be more effective in improving the attentional abilities and functional recovery in acute stroke patients than treated with conventional physiotherapy only
