Effectiveness of an educational package on milk hygiene practices of dairy workers of Milk Colony, Dhanas, Chandigarh, India

Abstract

Milk serves a good medium for growth of microorganisms and transmission of various disease agents. Almost everyone consumes milk in one or the other forms. Poor knowledge and practices on milk hygiene among dairy workers could result in public health risks. Enhancing the knowledge and practices of dairy workers regarding milk hygiene is the effective method for improving the hygiene of raw milk and preventing its contamination. In this regards a study was conducted to evaluate the effectiveness of an educational package on milk hygiene practices of dairy workers in Milk Colony, Dhanas, Chandigarh. All the dairies (37) in the selected area were randomized into experimental (19) and control (18) sites and all the dairy workers (80) of these dairies were included in the study. Educational package was developed and delivered to experimental group through flashbook, booklet and display of posters in dairies after assessing the baseline data. Daily reinforcement and weekly follow up of practices till one month was performed and routine practice was followed in control group. The study revealed that there was significant increase in the knowledge and practice of dairy workers after one month follow up (p<0.001). The significant improvements were seen especially in the overall hygiene of animals, milking technique and cleanliness of dairy. Knowledge and practices of dairy workers in control group showed no significant change. Cohen d for milk hygiene practices showed large (0.7) effect size. The study concludes that educational package on milk hygiene was effective in improving the knowledge and practices of dairy workers. Ethical approval for conducting the study was taken from the Institute of Ethics committee, PGIMER, Chandigarh and study is also registered under Clinical Trial Registry of India with CTRI no./2015/01/005369.
