Abstract

Cardiac nursing is a specialty focused on precluding and treating conditions related to the heart.  Cardiac specialty nurses need an understanding of normal cardiac anatomy and physiology, cardiac diseases and conditions, competency in assessment and monitoring skills. On- job education in cardiology is recommended for nurses to upgrade their skill and knowledge to provide quality patient care to the patients with cardiac ailments.

Keeping this in regard, a one-month certificate program on Cardiology Nursing- Center of Excellence (COE), with the title “The beat of life†was organized in discussion with consultants to enhance the knowledge and skill of the nurses for the specialty practice. A customized tool kit was designed to serve as a guide for the COE activities for the month. Advanced cardiac life support training was given to all the participants under the course. A quasi - experimental one group pretest and posttest research design was used to assess the effectiveness of the program.  The study showed that there was a significant difference in the Pre-test and post-test knowledge score of the staff nurses with positive ‘t’ test. Therefore, the certification program on cardiology Nursing was found to be effective. The program enhanced the knowledge of nurses about cardiac conditions and its treatment and had improved the quality of life of the patients.
