Abstract

Introduction: Hypertension is a most prevalent condition and leading cause for cardiovascular disease. Garlic lowers the blood pressure by causing pulmonary vasodilatation, interfering with the function of angiotensin I and preventing the platelet aggregation.

Materials and methods: A Quantitative True experimental pre-test post-test control group research approach and design was used, probability simple randomized sampling technique was used to select 60 hypertensive clients (30 - experimental and 30 - control group) from selected villages of Sri Muktsar Sahib. Mercury Sphygmomanometer and Stethoscope had been used to assess the blood pressure level. Garlic therapy 600 mg garlic powder per day for the period of 1 month has been provided to hypertensive clients of experimental group only. Posttest had been conducted after 1 month for both the groups.

Results: The study results shown that, in experimental group mean pretest Blood pressure level was 160.80±10.58 (Systolic), 96.33±6.68 (Diastolic) which reduced to 152.30±9.74 (Systolic), 90.00±6.16 (Diastolic) after administration of garlic therapy and was statistically significant at P≤0.001. In control group mean pretest Blood pressure level was 159.47±10.31 (Systolic), 96.00±6.74 (Diastolic) which remain nearly constant 158.93±9.55 (Systolic), 95.50±5.30 (Diastolic) in posttest. There was association of age and duration of hypertension with Systolic and Diastolic blood pressure level in experimental group which was statistically significant at p≤0.05 level of significance.

Conclusion: It concludes that garlic therapy was effective in reduction of hypertension
